The Colorado Athlete

February 28, 2019 by Don Kuhl

At a very young age, I started a statewide sports magazine in Colorado. I didn’t know what the hell I was doing. I wasn’t trying to get rich or famous, I just had this dream of publishing a quality publication combining stories of athletes at the high school, college and professional levels in a single state.

The Colorado Athlete was an extraordinary failure in every way. I attempted to write all the sports stories. I was in charge of distribution both on newsstands and through annual subscriptions. I handled marketing and public relations. I chose the printer. I put myself in charge of legal matters and finances. I was the advertising sales manager.

I went broke. I caused serious harm to my family. I was chased out of Denver. I got beat up. I hid in closets.

My advice to all young entrepreneurs: follow your dreams, but don’t be as stupid as me.
