Dying well

December 5, 2019 by Don Kuhl

I just finished a good book: “The Art of Dying Well” by Katy Butler.

It’s not in my strategic plan to drop dead for many years, but Dr. Butler brings up many facts and recommendations people of any age can ponder.

At 74, I’ve been present while six individuals have died. Four of them passed peacefully. It was as if I was reading the final chapter of a beautifully written book. All four had prepared for their exit. In three cases, people who loved the person were present for emotional support. The fourth one died unexpectedly but had led such a spectacular life, I think I saw a contented smile on her face when she took her last breaths.

The other two deaths I witnessed were painful to watch. I saw desperation. I saw anger. Most of all, I saw terror in each of their faces.

What makes the difference in people’s final chapter? Read Katy’s book. The answer is there.
