Flow

July 5, 2020 by Don Kuhl

I wonder if you are familiar with the psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. Mihaly describes a state of mind when a person can concentrate on one activity so completely that all other matters slip away. He calls it flow.

I think I get into a state of flow from time to time. For me, it’s at the opposite end of feeling anxious or bored or apathetic. Flow comes to me when I’m excited about doing something and feel a sense of control. I am in flow at times when I’m writing on something that has caught my fancy. I lose track of time. I’m not hungry, thirsty or tired. I’m in a state of ecstasy, and no one needs to know.

Psychologist Susan Jackson also studies and teaches flow. She works with top level athletes in many sports. She calls it being “in the zone.”

I’d be curious to hear about when you experience flow. When are you “in your zone?”
