A letter

September 18, 2023 by Don Kuhl

Dear Grandson Carter,

I was thinking of you today, now midway through college at the University of Wisconsin. Based on the wonderful young man I see today, I believe you are picking up the best from your great-great-grandfather Henry, your great-grandfather Vern, your grandfather (that’s me) and your dad, Jeff.

I was born too late to meet Henry, but I understand he was a hardworking Iowa farmer who had a love for education, taught in a one-room schoolhouse.

His son, Vern, received a full ride to Drake University in Des Moines but returned home to manage the farm when Henry died at an early age.

As your grandfather, there are many of my traits you should dodge, but I do think I have a creative soul. My imagination runs wild.

Your dad is a guy everyone loves. He’s a great salesman with a unique sense of humor.

And then there is you. You are an industrious young man (from Henry), a person who rushes to the fire (from Vern), a creative man who makes life interesting (from me) and a guy who brings joy to others (from your dad).

So Carter, go out there and make great things happen. You are made of the right stuff.

I’m so proud of you.

With lots of love,

Grandpa Don
