Different paths

February 19, 2024 by Don Kuhl

We can split groups of people in many ways: gender, age, social class, political preference, education, and on and on.

One of my old buddies, Mike, and I, both sneaking up on 80, got to thinking of friends we’ve known, splitting them up as risk-takers or straight-and-narrowers.

Who wins in the long run?

Risk-takers may run ahead and buy a fancy boat at 30. Or get put on probation. And catch up later.

The do-righters faithfully march along, getting public accolades while building up their IRAs.

Mike was a good student, a loyal company man with lots of awards hanging on his home office wall.

Me, not so much. I took a winding road and got muddy more than once. In the end, failures brought me success.

Mike and I hugged and laughed.

And called it a draw.
