What strong utterance did your mom blurt out at you when you weren’t being the perfect child she had dreamed of raising? (Come on now, your mother must have lost it every now and then.)
My mother, Irene, valued gumption over any other positive trait. Just sitting or standing without purpose and direction was not an option at our house. “Donald Duffy, what are you doing just sitting there like a bump on a log?”
As a happy fourth grader, I’d be watching “The Lone Ranger” on a Saturday morning. “Mom, let me finish watching Tonto and The Lone Ranger capture the Dalton Gang.”
No way! In an instant, Irene ushered me out the back door to pick up pine cones. The Dalton Gang may still be on the loose.
As an adult, I found Irene’s gumption was passed on to me and has served me well.
Okay, what’s your story?
