Sherry, my wife, claims I suffer from the infamous IAR syndrome (“I’m Always Right”).
I think of my best response. “Well, Sherry, you should use this to your advantage, because I am always right. Now you can count on that fact and behave in a more perfect way.”
That didn’t go over so well. I try again. “Well, Sherry, you know I suffer from a lack of self-confidence, so you can help me cope with this personal challenge by acting as if I’m always right.”
That really didn’t go over so well.
As always, when it comes to keeping a happy marriage, I pretend Sherry has uncovered a flaw in my behavior. “Well, honey, I’ll try to be more open in the future.”
Between the two of us, we know we can drop the word “syndrome” and recognize I am always right.
