All tied up

January 10, 2019 by Don Kuhl

Aging Friday

I used to get dressed up for work: suit, shirt and tie — the whole big shebang. My closet had all kinds of mix and matches. Ties were my specialty. I had well over 100 in all colors. Thin ones when they were in, wide ones when they took over.

Times change.

Months went by when I had no need to put on a tie. I’d open my closet door and stare into a historical museum. It took me almost a year to pass my collection on to The Salvation Army thrift store. The dress-up side of my closet was bare and, for some strange reason, it made me feel sad.

Last weekend I went to the Summit Mall to shop for a new tie. After an hour, I chose a white and red striped one and brought it home and hung it in my closet.

My new tie looks handsome hanging there all by itself. And I look pretty great not having it on.
