Bar sense

June 9, 2020 by Don Kuhl

For much of my life, when I found myself in financial trouble, I would get a night job bartending. Tips were great, and I learned some wisdom for the rest of my life.

Take this exchange for example:

College professor on barstool: “You seem like a bright young man. It’s a shame you waste your time bartending.”

Me: “Last call. Can I get you another martini?”

College professor on barstool: “Make it a double. Maybe I can help you make some sense of your life. You know, bring value to how you invest your time.”

Me, cleaning the counter while practicing my tip skills: “Thank you, sir. I’m awed by your willingness to mentor me.”

College professor on barstool: “None of this sir stuff. Just call me Dr. Weston.”

Me, dimming the lights: “That will be 23 dollars, Dr. Weston. I called you a cab.”
