Cane and able

March 16, 2026 by Don Kuhl

Sometimes I use a cane. Sometimes I don’t.

It depends on the circumstances. If I’m climbing the uneven ground going up our mountain, absolutely yes. If I’m going for a walk in downtown Carson City, I’ll go cane-less.

However, a deeper dive into cane or no-cane scenarios keeps me questioning my choices. The use of my cane offers me greater stability and helps me walk around with little effort. The flip side is: it lessens my opportunities to use my brain and muscles to improve my balance and overall fitness.

If I take this thought more broadly, do I use people and things as unnecessary crutches when I’d gain more by working things out on my own?

My thought is: if I’m Able, I don’t want to be Cane.

If I’ve bored you to death by now or you’re thinking, “What the heck is Don jabbering about,” I apologize. If there are a few of you who tracked with me, I’d love to know what you think.
