Classical greenhouse

February 2, 2021 by Don Kuhl

I’m spoiled. I admit it.

One pleasure I have in the middle of winter is a tiny greenhouse in my backyard. It’s not much for growing flowers or vegetables, but it feels so good to be me when I’m sitting in my broken chair, sipping hot chocolate with marshmallows and listening to the Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra playing Mozart (it features this fabulous French horn).

Here’s the deal. It’s cold outside and it’s snowing like crazy. My greenhouse has a tiny heater that keeps the temperature around 50 degrees – just perfect. The door is open a crack so my four shepherds can come and go as they please. I see my favorite spider in her web next to a broken statue of Don Quixote. I’m wearing three layers of clothes and a red stocking cap. I’m on the last chapter of “Elderhood” by Louise Aronson so I’ll know what to do if I ever feel old.

You have to have a place like this. Describe it to me. I’ll be right over.
