Don, the old explorer

October 10, 2019 by Don Kuhl

“Man’s mind stretched to a new idea never goes back to its original dimensions.”
– Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr.

I’m hoping the last stretch of my life continues to be one of discovery. I wish for my mind to continue to grow, to learn new stuff about myself and the world around me.

As I age, it takes a bit more gumption to expand into new territory. The old and familiar appear to be safe havens. At times, I hear myself saying, “Why should I learn about this new approach or discovery? Why don’t I close my door and stay with what feels safe and secure?”

In earlier years, I had no choice. New ideas and new gadgets exploded all around me. I owned companies. I had kids to keep up with. I needed to make a secure living. Now, the sense of urgency is gone. Curious and dynamic new generations have moved into my key roles of power and responsibility. Now, I need to take the initiative for my own sake.

My old friends can be placed in two categories: those sitting back in rocking chairs and those continuing to be explorers.

I want to be an explorer for as long as I can.
