Don’t trust your bed

August 5, 2021 by Don Kuhl

Over the last few years, I’ve had three back surgeries, both hips replaced, a bout with COVID-19… and now a new injury.

So picture this. I’m in the safest place possible: my special bed, high above the worries of the day. At 75, I still have problems going to sleep, but not tonight. It’s warm. I’m on top of my sheets, and my legs are relaxed, stretching outside the mattress frame. After all I’ve been through, I deserve this comforting slumber.

My guess is, I make a slight adjustment to my left. I fall off the bed and drop way down to the hard, wooden floor. I awake in pain.  My left shoulder is throbbing.

After X-rays and an MRI, I know I’ve done serious damage to my rotator cuff. My injury is similar to that of professional quarterbacks and tennis players. I’m in good company.

Today, I lowered the frame of my bed. I will now sleep closer to the middle of the mattress.

However, I fear my professional sports career has been cut short before it ever started.

Tom Brady is safe for now.
