Family photo forever

October 8, 2020 by Don Kuhl

I was the youngest in the Irene and Vern Kuhl family. It went girl (Connie), boy (Eddie), girl (Marlene) and me, little Don.

At 75, little Don still has pieces of each of his siblings deep inside.

Eddie was my big brother, a natural athlete with a big temper. Often, his actions went against Vern’s rules. He got into lots of trouble around town. Some deep emotional wounds followed him forever.

Marlene (who magically became Kelly) was closest to me in age. She was always popular and confident.  No surprise, she became a professional dancer.

The oldest, Connie, was born smart. She won awards. She appeared to do just the right things. Connie wished to please everyone. And she did.

Today, I look at this photo of the four of us standing piously with Irene and Vern

I believe we all change as we grow up and grow whole.

Yet, I see my brother and sisters in me still.

Who shaped you at the beginning?
