Fighting the bears

October 22, 2019 by Don Kuhl

Frank Tate saved my life.

Several bears were chasing me up the mountain. Frank jumped in their path and wrestled all of them to the ground. Knowing they were beaten, the bears took off into the underbrush, never to return.

Of course, this never happened. Frank was a softy, overweight and possessed little physical prowess.

Yet, I do believe Frank Tate saved my life.

I was a young man going up a steep mountain.

One bear chasing me was my early romance with alcohol – any form of alcohol.

Another bear that almost devoured me was my selfishness – my lack of respect for others.

The last bear that almost got me was a feeling of being a victim. Somehow, I felt like I had gotten royally screwed by almost everybody.

Frank Tate was my college professor. Frank Tate was my mentor. Frank Tate was my friend.

With patience, wisdom and love, Frank Tate chased all my bears away.
