Hall of fame

March 30, 2026 by Don Kuhl

A few months ago, I was honored to enter the Lyons Township High School Hall of Fame. It came as a complete surprise, and I felt happy and humbled by joining some famous former graduates.

After riding in the lead car in the homecoming parade and throwing candy to the kids and adults who lined the streets of LaGrange, there was a beautiful ceremony for me and fellow inductee Grace Hou Ovnik, class of 1988 and now Deputy Governor for Health and Human Services of Illinois. The fun started when I stumbled (Joe Biden style) while climbing the four steps to the stage to receive my bronze award. As subdued laughter rippled through the room, I attempted to act as if it was part of my shtick. It wasn’t. They knew it. My speech was very brief. I didn’t want to stumble again. Good choice, Don.

Next, I tossed the coin at the start of the homecoming football game. Standing there with the refs and the captains of both teams, I felt so darn good. I wanted to be there in that same huddle when I was back in high school. I might have if I had been good enough to even make the team.

The day before, I had the privilege of speaking to a bright LTHS class about how to become an entrepreneur. I felt at home and joyous while mixing it up with bright, young and ambitious students.

Bottom line: It was one of the most precious days of my life. It brought back all the memories and emotions, both good and bad, of my high school days. I’d recommend it to anyone: return to your high school and walk back to those years that greatly made you the person you are today.

I love you, Ms. Kay Keefe. Wherever you are, thank you.
