Long division

September 17, 2020 by Don Kuhl

I was getting a little tired of all the self-proclaimed experts telling me if I don’t use it, I’ll lose it.

For one thing, they don’t get real specific on what the “it” is. Are they talking about physical or mental things? I pray the “it” isn’t too personal.

So I thought I’d test out their theory on something real safe. Can I still do long division? Or have I lost my old arithmetic talents due to nonuse since my Saint Cecilia grade school days?

I get out my sharpened pencil and paper and think of a big number. I make one up: 842,668. This used to be called the dividend. Then I use my age, 75, as the little number called the divisor. I go to work searching for the quotient and the remainder.

Three minutes go by. Then 10 minutes. I’m confused and frustrated. Help!

I have a tip for you. If you don’t use it, you’ll lose it.
