Nurse Ratched

May 11, 2021 by Don Kuhl

I’ve just completed another evidence-based study to share with you. It’s about nurses who work in hospitals.

Of course, I needed to invest a few days in the hospital to do my research. It’s just one of the sacrifices that outstanding researchers, like me, endure in order to bring new findings to the masses.

I won’t bore you with the details of my study. I’ll jump right to the conclusion.

Almost all nurses who work those challenging 12-hour shifts are caring, talented professionals. How fortunate patients are to have so many men and women who chose this challenging profession.

Yet, there is always one Nurse Ratched (as in “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest”) who works the night shift. He or she brings an authoritarian, almost angry, presence to the hospital floor. Nurse Ratched expects patients to fall in line, to have little or no expectations.

To complete my study, I was required to challenge the authority of Nurse Ratched. I timidly asked for more ice in my water cup.

Suffice it to say, this was not a good idea.

Final conclusion: Do not challenge rigid authority when you are flat on your back in a hospital bed.
