Sentarse

January 5, 2026 by Don Kuhl

My dogs pay no attention to me, so I figure it must be a language barrier.

Although all four are Swiss shepherds, and German is the popular language, I flunked German in high school and squeezed by in Introductory Spanish because Señorita Klector (teacher) thought Tim McCoulough and I were funny, so I choose to train our pups in Spanish.

I told our four shepherds to “sentarse” (sit), and only one sat down: Jody Beth. Then, in an authoritative voice, I shouted “buscal” (fetch) and threw a ball out for them to chase after. The boys just sat there, but Amy Beth tore out and grabbed the ball and brought it back to me.

Sad, sad memories returned. In my language classes in high school, all the girls could twirl their Rs and speak so fluently in these foreign languages, and Tim and I just sweated it out until the bell rang.

I’m giving special treats to my three male shepherds. Sorry, Jody, showoff.
