The real me

December 1, 2025 by Don Kuhl

One of my early mentors, Art Reynolds, told me I could get a good picture of the real me by studying the character and traits of my three best friends. I was in college way back then and thought of who I considered best friends.

One was definitely my drinking buddy, Toby. He was my friend because he always had bucks for beer, and we each acted like we believed the wild stories we told each other.

Another was my current girlfriend, Anita. She was super cute and more experienced than me in the art of college romance. Anita also was a bright student who did all of my term papers in American History.

Ouch, coming up with a third best friend was tough. I just stuck with two, Toby and Anita, and I wasn’t too sold on either of them.

Last night, I recalled what Art Reynolds had recommended in my search for the real me. What about now?

I’ve come a long ways in 60 years. When I now think of my three best friends, I’m pretty satisfied with who the real me became.
