Homecoming Queen

November 11, 2018 by Don Kuhl

Aging Monday

Did you know I dated the Homecoming Queen at the big high school I graduated from? I was a nothing, never allowed at the popular lunch table, stuttered my way to the lower half of my high school class and never made the varsity high school basketball or football team. What the hell did she see in me?

She went on to a prestigious college in the Midwest and married herself a pharmacist. I went on to the University of Illinois and flunked out my sophomore year.

Yet, it stuck with me. What the hell did she see in me during those nervous high school years?

At 73, I still don’t have an answer. But I want to thank you, Chris Miller, because you, as much as anyone, found value in a struggling boy and allowed him to grow up to be a confident man.
