Ant investigator

March 9, 2026 by Don Kuhl

I have normal hobbies. This may not be one of them.

I can follow one ant for hours. Not any old ant. Ants live in organized, cooperative communities. I watch and pick out one, generally a busy worker. My choice yesterday was Art the Ant Angel. I chose Art because he was working his butt off (yes, ants have butts). Art was helping his pals move huge pieces of grass, taking guard duty on the perimeter and moving a leaf four times his size a distance of six pavers. It’s embarrassing to say I fell in love with Art at first sight. So, let’s just admit I immediately gained extraordinary respect for him.

What can we learn from a little old ant? A bunch. Art helped me recognize the responsibility of helping others, the importance of teamwork and how to make the most of my limited skillset. But most of all, Art the Ant Angel taught me to never give up. Never.

Okay, maybe I really did fall in love with Art.
