Clean hands

March 17, 2020 by Don Kuhl

Am I going off the edge?

So the world is telling me to wash my hands frequently. To hang in there for at least 20 seconds. Make sure I pay attention to my fingernails. Wipe my hands thoroughly on a clean towel.

At first, I was just being compliant. Off I’d go to the bathroom. In almost all my previous visits to the bathroom, I’d be doing more than just washing my hands. Not now. “Excuse me folks while I go wash my hands. Yes, that’s all I’m going to be doing.”

Then a few weeks ago, something magical happened. I was in the middle of humming my 20-second version of “Yankee Doodle” to make sure I put in my required time at the sink when I discovered I enjoyed washing my hands. I liked the warm water on my fingertips. I watched little bubbles of soap caressing my palms. I found myself softly singing, “Like a surgeon, washed for the very first time.”

Is washing my hands over 20 times per day a bit over the top?
