Shifting gifting

July 25, 2019 by Don Kuhl

It’s amazing how much I’ve been gifted in my life.

Although I did not come from a wealthy family, my mom and dad made sure I had everything a young boy needed – and often special gifts that were unexpected and made me feel super-duper.

At school – grade school, high school and college – teachers and counselors provided me gifts of self-confidence, curiosity and knowledge.

During my low points as a young adult, friends and mentors gifted me with second chances, robust advice and high expectations.

As the years clicked along, I became a responsible adult. Over the last few decades, I have held myself personally accountable for my predicaments, failures and faux pas, which still take place on occasion. I do not see myself as a victim, but rather as the captain of my day-to-day behaviors. I feel empowered.

How wonderful it is now to quietly distribute both little and big gifts to those I love. It’s my way of thanking the many people who helped me grow up.
