Well-read

March 22, 2020 by Don Kuhl

What’s wrong with me? Attempting to pick up little nuggets that will serve me in my elder years, I’ve purchased yet another self-help book. I have so many hardbound guidebooks to serenity, I can set them up like dominoes. Just a nudge, and one book will fall on the next one and then the next and so on. If I’m careful and use my hardwood floor, I’m capable of putting on quite a show. As they tumble along, I will have the cascading books spell out the word HELP in cursive.

My latest book is on resilience. Among other tips, it’s teaching me to reframe my negative thoughts.

For example, when I was leaving the Costco parking lot yesterday, this knucklehead pulled right out in my lane. I swerved off the road to avert a crash. The inattentive driver, in his black BMW, blared his horn while gesturing with a finger to show me he was number one.

According to my new book, my negative thoughts needed immediate reframing.

I totally failed to use my mental resilience strategies for reframing. I stayed in my “catch up with this jerk” mode.

I think I need to purchase another self-help book.
